The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) in Saudi Arabia has developed the Comprehensive Regeneration Approach to promote sustainable development while conserving biodiversity. This framework focuses on environmental protection, cultural heritage, resilient infrastructure, and community engagement, aligning with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
Central to this approach are projects like rewilding AlUla, which involves planting over thirty million native trees and reintroducing species like the Arabian gazelle and Nubian ibex. RCU has also initiated a native plant nursery to produce local seeds and seedlings, supporting both ecosystem restoration and community employment.
The program highlights community-centric conservation, training over 150 residents as wildlife rangers to protect local biodiversity while fostering sustainable economic growth. Plans to reintroduce the critically endangered Arabian Leopard demonstrate RCU’s commitment to preserving AlUla’s natural and cultural heritage.
This holistic model serves as an example for global biodiversity efforts, showcasing how ecological restoration can benefit both the environment and local communities.
