Physical Activity and Lifestyle of Female Health Science Students at Tarnów University: A Study on Health-Promoting Behaviors
Physical activity and lifestyle choices play a crucial role in determining one's health and well-being. A recent study published in IgMin Research focused on evaluating these aspects among female students of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Applied Sciences in Tarnów, Poland. Conducted in early 2023, the study analyzed physical activity frequency, duration, and settings, while also examining health-related behaviors across different study fields, including physiotherapy, physical education, nursing, and cosmetology.
The findings reveal that most female students maintain an active and health-conscious lifestyle. Over 90% of participants recognize the importance of physical fitness and other health-promoting practices for their future professions. Interestingly, physical education students reported the highest levels of activity, with a significant portion engaging in physical exercises outdoors, at home, or in gyms. Common activities included fitness, running, and cycling, emphasizing that active participation is influenced by the specific field of study.
Furthermore, the study highlights that first-year physiotherapy students tend to be more active and consistent in their exercise routines than their fourth-year counterparts, possibly due to academic workload or professional responsibilities that arise as students progress in their studies. Despite these differences in physical activity, overall lifestyle behaviors did not vary significantly among the fields of study or academic years. Most students practiced healthy dietary habits, managed stress, and avoided smoking, aligning with their academic and career-related motivations.
This research underscores the impact of academic orientation on students' health behaviors, providing valuable insights for educational programs that aim to foster lifelong health-conscious habits. Such findings suggest that integrating more health education into curricula could further reinforce these positive behaviors, especially for students preparing for health-oriented careers.
