Enhancing Well-being among Portuguese Firefighters through Healthy Lifestyle Practices

This study explores the lifestyle habits of Portuguese firefighters and examines how these behaviors impact their overall well-being, particularly in terms of "flourishing," which encompasses life satisfaction, purpose, and positive relationships. Firefighters face significant physical and emotional challenges daily, from exposure to dangerous environments to high-stress situations. A healthy lifestyle acts as a vital resource to help them manage these demands.

Using an adapted FANTASTIC lifestyle questionnaire, the study assessed the habits of 860 Portuguese firefighters. The results were encouraging, with most participants rating their lifestyle as good. The findings revealed both strengths and areas needing improvement. For instance, while 81.5% reported engaging in physical activity weekly and 63.5% consistently gave and received affection, challenges included high-calorie food consumption (81.2%) and occasional sleep difficulties (50.9%).

This lifestyle assessment highlights a positive correlation between healthy habits and subjective well-being, suggesting that firefighters who prioritize their health tend to have higher levels of life satisfaction and resilience. With the demands of the firefighting profession in mind, the study emphasizes the importance of promoting a healthy work culture. This could include providing resources for stress management, nutrition training, and physical fitness programs tailored to the unique challenges firefighters face.

By investing in their lifestyle and well-being, firefighting organizations can enhance resilience, job satisfaction, and effectiveness among these dedicated professionals, ultimately leading to improved service and safety outcomes.
