Low Back Pain Among Chinese Healthcare Workers: A Growing Concern

Low Back Pain (LBP) is a prevalent issue among healthcare professionals (HCPs), significantly affecting their daily lives and work quality. A recent multi-center survey highlights the prevalence of LBP in Chinese surgeons and surgical nurses, offering insights into the risk factors and potential solutions.

Key Findings:

  1. Prevalence and Severity of LBP:

    • 90.4% of participants reported mild LBP, while 6.4% experienced moderate and 3.2% severe LBP.
    • Neck pain (46%) and knee pain (26%) were common among those with LBP.
  2. Risk Factors Identified:

    • Long working hours (>55 hours per week) and extended operation times contribute to higher LBP rates.
    • Incorrect working postures of the trunk and lower extremities significantly increase LBP risk.
    • Orthopedic surgeons were identified as having the highest risk of LBP due to prolonged procedures and physical demands.
  3. Demographics of Affected HCPs:

    • The study analyzed 250 participants with a mean age of 45.8 years, predominantly male (81.2%).
    • Factors such as age, Body Mass Index (BMI), and working experience were associated with LBP.
  4. Impact of Posture:

    • Assessment using the Ovako Working Posture Assessment System (OWAS) revealed that 42.8% of participants had postures requiring corrective action.
    • Trunk and lower extremity posture issues were linked to both neck and knee pain.

Solutions and Recommendations:

  • Promoting Ergonomic Practices:

    • Proper training in body mechanics and ergonomic adjustments can reduce the strain on HCPs.
    • Regular breaks and stretching exercises during shifts are essential for preventing LBP.
  • Physical Activity:

    • Encouraging regular sports or neuromuscular exercises helps reduce LBP severity and improves overall physical health.
  • Targeted Interventions:

    • Focused strategies for high-risk groups, such as orthopedic surgeons, to minimize posture-related issues and work-related stress.
  • Awareness and Education:

    • Implementing workplace health programs to raise awareness about LBP prevention and management.

Conclusion:

LBP is a significant challenge among Chinese healthcare workers, particularly surgeons and surgical nurses. Addressing ergonomic practices, promoting physical activity, and implementing preventive measures can improve their health outcomes and work efficiency.
